Physical Science Technician

Specific Tasks/Duties:

Receiving, logging-in, and tracking grain samples for laboratory use

Preparing samples for analysis such as removing foreign material, dividing, grinding, weighing, extracting, evaporating solvents, and purifying extracts

Preparing reagents for laboratory using volumetric devices and analytical balance

Operating a variety of instruments/equipment including, but not limited to, analytical balances, grinders, dielectric moisture meters, centrifuges, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and lateral flow strip technologies, and spectrometers

Monitoring and maintaining laboratory equipment to ensure proper function, such as water purification systems, barometers, lab mills/grinders, thermometers, pH meters, water baths, centrifuges

Entering sample data received from field offices into excel spreadsheets, access database and scanning and saving e-files in a systematic order

Analyzing entered data for any trends on a weekly basis such as barometric pressures and temperatures and reporting any anomalies to senior scientists

Collecting, interpreting, and maintaining detailed laboratory data records so that the precision and quality of the test results are documented and formatted in a timely manner

Maintaining accurate records for assigned duties

Use of Microsoft Office products – Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, and SharePoint

Organizing, analyzing, evaluating, and submitting lab reports to appropriate staff

Performing calculations on a personal computer, including basic calculations for statistical evaluation of data

Preparing formal reports on results of test data to the immediate supervisor

Recognizing and reporting significant deviations or unusual developments during processing and/or results of tests to a senior scientist; working with senior staff for investigating probable causes and resolving problems


Candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.
