It’s September already! While we’re still a bit hot here in Arizona, we know many of you are seeking cooler weather and winter activities. We currently have travel assignments in Alaska, Tennessee, New Mexico, and Texas. Each has its own pros and cons, opportunities, and adventures waiting just for you.

If you’re a fan of winter weather, Alaska, specifically Utqiapak, formerly Barrow, needs medical professionals. Tennessee offers popular tourist attractions plus opportunities to venture outside, New Mexico and Texas have some of the best Southwestern and Mexican food, shopping, and outdoor adventures. Think about what you’d like to do and where you’ve always wanted to work and visit and then give us a call! We’d love to chat with you about opportunities.

Utqiapak, Alaska (formerly known as Barrow)

Barrow, Alaska, now officially known by its Inupiaq name Utqiagvik, is located by the Arctic Ocean beach. As you might imagine, the weather is cold with temperatures varying from -19 degrees F to 47 degrees F and there are less than six inches of rain per year. The good news is that working here will be an adventure and a different culture in which you can immerse yourself.

This northernmost town in the United States is home to 4,700 people who earn a median income of just under $35,000. Most people have earned up to a high school diploma. While the legal drinking age is 21 years old, it is illegal to sell alcohol in Utqiagvik, though you can import and consume it. The community needs medical workers and we have many open positions available.

While in Utqiapak, you will notice there are no roads that lead to or from the town. You will need to take a plane to get there. The people are primarily hunters of whales, seals, polar bears, walrus, waterfowl, caribou, and fish from the Arctic Ocean or nearby lakes. If you’re there in November, you will live in darkness for 165 days, so bring books or an e-reader with you. Enjoy the lagoon boardwalk, the Inupiat Heritage Center which is run by the National Park Service and offers exhibits on the history and culture of the people, grab a selfie at the Whale Bone Arch, or take your camera and see wildlife that you may not see anywhere else in the world.

Tennessee

If cold weather and winter darn-near-year-round aren’t for you, let’s tell you about Tennessee. The state offers a more temperate climate than Alaska, that’s for sure! While summer lasts well into September, you won’t experience harsh winters like in the northeast or Alaska.

When driving through Tennessee, take note of the geography. Western Tennessee appears more like the plains of Kansas, while the Eastern portion is hilly and green. Three cities run the main highway; east to west, they are Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville. Wherever you select, there are hiking opportunities.

There are 6 Tennessee Hikes You Have to See to Believe. Each has its own adventure. From waterfalls to archaeological sites, and historic locations like T.O. Fuller State Park, there’s a lot to be learned and experienced here. We imagine fall is perfect here as the trees are changing colors, making hiking a perfect activity.

On the border of Tennessee and North Carolina is the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. In addition to the magnificent views of nature and wildlife, there is camping, and Cades Cove which is an 11-mile loop that can be biked or walked. As always, please check the website for reservation information and COVID-19 protocols.

New Mexico

If you’re ready to experience culture, food, and nature, New Mexico is the place for you! Enjoy hatch chile season that typically runs from August through September. Try and buy at the Hatch Chile Festival! New Mexican food is rich in chiles and other regional flavors.

For those seeking adventure, visit the National State Park Carlsbad Caverns. Make a reservation and take a tour of the caverns and enjoy the short hike at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail. On the trail, you will learn about the unique plants in the park and surrounding area.

We’ve written Experience the Southwest highlighting additional food, event, and outdoor adventures in this beautiful state.
