You may be spending the holiday season away from friends and family but that doesn’t mean you can’t spread holiday cheer. In this article, we discuss ways our medical professionals are making the best of a travel nurse assignment during the holidays.

Celebrate with coworkers and friends.

Just because your holiday isn’t as traditional this season, doesn’t mean you can’t host Friendsgiving, an ugly sweater party, or other festive events. Grab a few work friends for a white elephant gift exchange. Host a Christmas cocktail and cookie exchange. Blast the Christmas music and celebrate! This time of year is about being with good people wherever you are.

Volunteer to help those in need.

Volunteering often has a way of lifting the spirits not only of those you help but for you as well. It’s the perfect time to share your talents and time with others.

Find out how you can help patients who are in the hospital without family nearby. Contact local universities to find out how you can serve students who are also away from home. Serve a meal at a homeless shelter. Ask area churches how you can help those in need. Giving back to people or the community at any time of year always feels good.

Take a trip to a nearby snowy location.

Do you love winter sports? Take time this holiday season for a trip to a nearby snowy location. Colorado, Arizona (yes, we get snow up North), and Utah are just a few of the places offering skiing, snowboarding, and other cold weather fun. Winterize your car and take a road trip!

Explore local events while on travel assignment during the holidays.

This time of year, there are no shortage of holiday events. We recommend liking local chambers of commerce, and city, town, and business pages on social media. When they announce events like the lighting of Christmas trees, holiday plays, and craft fairs, you will get notifications of what is going on. These events are a great way to learn more about the community when you’re making the best of a travel assignment during the holidays and throughout the year.

Make time for loved ones.

This is the perfect time of year to celebrate new friendships and reconnect with friends and family. Whether in-person or via video chat, make time for the people that mean the most to you. Send holiday cards. Bake and deliver cookies. Take a road trip to see nearby family and friends. Make the most of this time.

We hope our ideas for making the best of a travel assignment during the holidays help you celebrate in your own way. Just because you aren’t at home, doesn’t mean you can’t have a great time on assignment.
