We had the opportunity to talk to Medical Technologist Charito about her background and experience. Charito, who goes by the nickname Chat, was born and raised in the Philippines. It was there that she earned her Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. After four years of working there, she received an opportunity to work in the United States. She says this opened a lot of learning experiences and she has no regrets about becoming a traveler.

Tell us about how you decided to become a Medical Technologist.

I am one of six siblings. Four out of seven of us are healthcare professionals – a medical doctor, two nurses, and me. I guess you could say I was born to be in healthcare!

Why did you want to start traveling?

Over the years, I have met amazing people on my journey. When the opportunity presented itself to travel for work, I took the leap!

I love what I do, and my husband works remotely so it’s a great time for us both to see different parts of the country. I also like to see how other laboratories are being run and to learn more about instrumentations and analyzers, as well as the Laboratory Information System (LIS) being used.

Where is your current contract?

Right now, I am working at Memorial Hospital of Converse County in Douglas, Wyoming. It is my first assignment as a Traveling Medical Technologist, and I am loving the experience!

What are you loving so far?

I love meeting other Med Techs as well as learning about a new facility. The lab here is run extremely well. My husband and I love Wyoming. It is beautiful here. As our schedules allow, we explore the area and surrounding states. National and state parks and walking or hiking trails are among our favorites so far.

What do you like most about your job?

I love the continuous learning that is required. So far, I have no regrets about becoming a traveler. It’s a wonderful opportunity for my career and personally for me and my family.

What advice would you give someone thinking about taking a travel position?

To use a famous slogan: Just do it! You won’t regret it.

Thank you, Chat, for sharing your experience as a Medical Technologist! We wish you the best.
